Poppy

I woke up this morning after a long night in my youngest sons bed, and realised my mum had asked me yesterday to make a poppy for her and my oldest son so they could wear it to kinder (she picks him up on Wednesdays, and she also works there!). So, in a hurry with only half an hour to spare, I whipped up this cute little poppy, which is in honour of the heroes who sacrificed everything to make our lives better.

Materials needed:

  • 5.50mm/I Crochet Hook

  • Red coloured thick Worsted Weight Yarn (10-12 ply). I used Bernat in red

  • Darning needle

  • Scissors

  • Black Button (any size you prefer)

  • Safety Pin to attach poppy

Stitches & Abbrieviations (US Terms)

Chain (Ch)

Single Crochet (SC)

Double Crochet (DC)

Stitch (st)

Slip Stitch (ss)

Round (Rnd)

Start by Chaining 2

Rnd 1: 10sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join to 1st sc. Pull end to close ring.

Rnd 2: Ch3, ss in next 2 sc *Ch3, ss in next 2 sc* repeat 3 more times (total 5 Ch3's).

Rnd 3: ss in Ch3 space. Ch3, 5DC in same space. *ss in next Ch3 space, Ch3, 5DC in same space, ss in same space* repeat 3 more times (total 5 petals). Finish off, leaving long tail for sewing button on, sewing petals together and sewing in ends.

Using darning needle, sew petals together, positioning each petal slightly over one another in the same direction. This will create the look of a poppy. It will also bunch the flower nicely.

Attach the button in the centre. Leave a loop at the back if you wish, this is so you can attach the safety pin easily. Sew in all ends, and close any gaps.
