Newborn Crochet Pants

These little newborn pants are a must-have for your babies very first photography session! They are so versatile, can be for boys or girls, and can be made in ANY colour & any fibre yarn! Acrylic is generally best for newborns as it is low irritant, but these would also look cute in a wispy wool blend yarn, like James C Brett Aztec.

This pattern is fairly straight forward, however a beginner crocheter might have trouble understanding how to do the leg cuffs. I have included as many pictures as possible, but like always I am here if you get stuck.

The only thing I ask from you, is to name me in any work that you share

Materials needed:

  • 5mm/H Crochet Hook

  • A soft Aran Weight Yarn (10 ply). I used Caron Simply Soft in Light Country Peach. You could even get away with using a thicker 8ply yarn (I have used Bendigo Woollen Mills 8ply wool before), as long as your measurement of the waistband is 12 inches long. Just make sure to adjust your hook size if you need to!

  • Darning needle to sew in ends

  • Large Eye darning needle to thread waistband tie through pants

  • Scissors

  • Measuring Tape

Stitches & Abbrieviations (US Terms)

Chain (Ch)

Single Crochet (SC)

Double Crochet (DC)

Stitch (st)

Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog)

Row (R)

Round (Rnd)

Wrong Side (ws)

Right side (rs)

Special Notes

Chain 1 (Ch1) and Chain 2 (Ch2) are not counted as stitches, rather turning stitches. Stitch count is in brackets (st) at the end of each round, so count each stitch after each round.

Special Stitches

sc2tog means to use single crochet to join two stitches together. It is a way to decrease (make the item smaller.) - Insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Start with the Waistband

Ch 7

R1: SC in 2nd ch from hook, SC across remainder ch. Ch1, turn (6st)

R2: SC in back loops only. Ch1, turn (6st)

R3 - R50: Repeat row 2 (6st). Your piece should measure approx. 12 inches (See Picture below)

Join row 1 to row 50 using ss in back loops (6st). Do not cut yarn.

Start the Pants

Turn work so waistband is pointng down. The next section is worked in rounds. Don't forget to SC over yarn tail in Rnd 1.

Rnd 1: SC evenly around waistband. Join to 1st SC, Ch2 (50st)

Rnd 2: DC in each SC. Join to 1st DC, ch2, turn (50st)

Note: Make sure you turn after each round when directed. This will make the joining seam (back of the pants) straight. If you don't turn after each round, the seam will become lop-sided.

Rnd 3 (ws): DC in same stitch as ch2, DC in each st across. Ch2, turn (50st).

Rnd 4 (rs): Dc in same stitch as ch2, DC across. Ch2, turn (50st)

Rnd 5 to Rnd 8: Repeat Rnd 3 and Rnd 4. Rnd 8 should end on Rnd 4 (rs). Joing at the end of Rnd 8, do not turn. Do not cut yarn, begin First Leg.

First Leg (right leg)

You will be working from the back of the pants.

Rnd 9 (rs): Ch2, DC in same stitch and next 24st. Join to 1st DC of this round, Ch2. This creates right leg. (25st).

Rnd 10 (rs): DC in same stitch as Ch2 and next 24st. Ch2, turn (25st)

Your work should look like this after Rnd 9 and beginning of Rnd 10:

Rnd 11 (ws): DC in same sitch as Ch2 and next 24st. Ch2, turn (25st)

Rnd 12 - Rnd 16: Repeat Rnd 10 and Rnd 11. Rnd 16 should end on a Rnd 10 repeat (rs). (25st). Do not cut yarn. Begin the first Cuff.

Your first leg (right leg shown from the back of pants) should look like this:

Cuffs (for both legs)

This section may be a bit tricky, so please refer to the pictures I have provided. These stitches are worked in Rows.

Ch 6

Row 1: Work 5 SC back down the chain. Sc2tog the 1st DC from Rnd 16 and the 2nd DC from Rnd 16. Turn.

Row 2: SC in back loops of the 5 SC just worked. Ch1, turn (5st)

Row 3: SC in back loops. Sc2tog the next 2 DC of Rnd 16. Turn.

Row 4 to Row 24: Repeat row 2 and row 3.

This is how the cuff should be coming along:

Row 25: SC in last DC of Rnd 16 of pants, turn and ss Row 1 of cuff and Row 24 together. Finish off and sew in ends. Begin 2nd leg.

Second Leg (left leg)

Start the left leg from the back of pants. This is so all seams are at the back.

Rnd 1 (rs): Leaving a long tail (so you can sew crotch together later), join yarn in DC just before right leg. Ch2, DC in same stitch. DC in the DC at the front of the pants. You have just created the crotch. DC in the next 23st. Join, Ch2 (25st)

Rnd 2 (rs): DC in same stitch as Ch2 and next 24st. Ch2, turn (25st)

Rnd 3 (ws): DC in same sitch as Ch2 and next 24st. Ch2, turn (25st)

Rnd 4 to Rnd 8: Repeat Rnd 2 and Rnd 3. Rnd 8 should end on a Rnd 2 repeat (rs). (25st). Do not cut yarn. Begin the second cuff, using same Cuff pattern above.

You are almost done! Now you need to add the waistband tie. This is optional, but I find it finishes off the pants nicely and the rib can sometimes stretch too much.

Waistband Tie

With the same colour yarn (or different colour!), Chain 115, or until it reaches approx 34 inches. I have used purple yarn just so you can see properly.

Now we are working from the front of the pants. Find the centre of the pants. Using the large eye darning needle, thread chain tie through ribs of the waistband (see picture on the left).

This is how the tie should look threaded through the ribs. I have left 2 rows of SC in the middle free.

The last thing to do is to sew in any ends with your darning needle, and don't forget to sew the crutch closed with the long tail you left !

Ta Da! You have finished! Here is the finished piece:
